The ReVox Tapes

Peter Parker’s Rock N Roll Club have a new LP coming out soon. It’s not so much a follow up to Straight to Vinyl but catalogues how the band formed and recorded their first songs together. This story is told on the back of the LP sleeve. The image on the front is a painting by Sakura, the band’s drummer, and of course I designed the back.

Do I Wanna Know?

I haven’t listened to Arctic Monkeys in years. Not because I went off them but just because I never got around to buying or even listening to their last two albums (I didn’t know it has been so long since Favourite Last Nightmare). There’s been too much folk/punk rock in my ears and not much else. However, I have listened to their new single at least four times this evening. Oh, the guitar…

Books that should exist

100 Books That SHOULD be Written is an excellent 100 day project by Tyler Adam Smith, that started in April this year. He comes up with ideas for books that don’t exist but he feels definitely should and designs the front covers. There are so many great ideas (although a lot, as well, that I don’t “get”) and a wide variety of beautiful designs on the blog. Here are my favourites…

And this was his first design…

Born to Swim

So, I went to see Bruce Springsteen last night at Wembley Stadium. How he, and the E-Street Band, can play for over 3 hours for every show they do I shall never understand – Bruce himself is over 60 years old! Not complaining though, every minute of it was excellent.

Born to Run has always been a favourite Springsteen song of mine, and album too – plus I really like the album artwork, or the photography anyway. I have a t-shirt that says “Born to Surf” on it. I wasn’t born to surf, in fact I’ve never even been surfing but it was a prize in a raffle. However, if I switch run/surf for swim it makes more sense…

Paper cut Game of Thrones

These intricate paper cut Game of Thrones characters are an on-going project by Emma Jackson, an excellent illustrator and friend of mine. She’s just completed her degree at Falmouth University and the degree show opens to the public today. If Falmouth wasn’t so far and I hadn’t already visited briefly last week I’d love to go down and see the graphic design and illustration degree shows. Alas, Falmouth is 300 miles too far away.

Davos Seaworth

Jaime Lannister

Robb Stark

Daenerys Targaryen

You can buy these and other paper cuts/print at Emma’s etsy store.

The Wolverine

I am very much looking forward to this.

Here’s a much less handsome Wolverine that I drew over 4 years ago. I actually referenced the graphic novel that part of the new film is based on, by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont, in which he is not as good looking as Hugh Jackman. I’ve been looking forward to Wolverine in Japan for years.

A brief history of typography

Thanks to Sophie on the emc design blog for sharing this brilliant little video.

North Devon

I’ve travelled a lot of miles this past weekend, well from Thursday really, and for once I actually did all the driving – no trains involved. Joined by Richard (all the way from Australia!) and Beth, we drove down to Falmouth on Thursday but it was a short stay… On Friday we joined the Sea Swimming Clubbers and headed up to Bude – sea pool! – and then on to North Devon for an amazing weekend of sunshine, camping and, of course, sea swimming.

Falmouth, briefly.
There’s no photographs of Bude as I was a little stressed out after Foxy had an accident (flat tyre/busted wheel). This is Foxy’s good side at the campsite in Ilfracombe.
Secret beach.
Pirate crazy golf is the best!
I had a go in these myself, great fun.
Monkey Island was hard and there was no three-headed monkey.
Valley of the rocks.

Pixel Superheroes

Sometimes the simplest idea/illustration/design(s) are the best. Pixels are about as simple as you can get but that doesn’t make these Pixel Superheroes by Ercan Akkaya any less awesome. Not to mention the nostalgia that pixel art brings to mind.

Some of my favourite pixel images…

In the style of Zelda

I am currently trying to draw in the style of Zelda, Wind Waker in particular (although I guess Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are the same style as well). But I’m not actually drawing Zelda characters, I’m drawing characters from a book. So from my imagination. It’s hard – I’m not an illustrator. But maybe if I come up with anything good I will share…

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

I also really want to play Wind Waker again but I never owned it myself. Currently watching a few copies on eBay, waiting to pounce on one of them.
