Band of Horses

I went to my first Band of Horses gig last night at Hammersmith Apollo. Even after wanting/waiting to see them for a good few years, they still managed to excede expectations. It was a nice change from my recent lively folk/punk gigs to enjoy something a little more laid back. But what I really loved about the show was instead of simply having their band name behind them on stage they had film clips.

Film clips of mountains, plains, lakes, trees, sea and generally beautiful North American scenery that match BoH’s music perfectly. I tried to take a few photographs of some of the backdrops but I’m almost certain there will be much better examples elsewhere on the internet.

FXU Union General Meeting

“FXU [Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union] holds at least one General Meeting per term. These meetings are a great opportunity to get together as students and have a collective voice to really make things better for students’ university experience whether it’s mandating the Students’ Union to do something or raising important issues.”

Initially I designed the main poster for the Winter meeting, then based Spring and Summer’s posters on the first, with each having a different designated colour. Information can be updated on next year’s posters when needed.

Chough crazy

You may recall, way back at the end of my degree, I worked with Cornwall Film Festival on their 2012 re-brand. I illustrated/designed them a new chough – their mascot and the national bird of Cornwall – who comes in a variety of shapes and forms. I also chose a colour palette and a new primary typeface for them to use.

At the beginning of July I passed on the necessary files and left them to do as they wished with. Over the couple of months I’ve seen a few photographs featuring my designs around the internet and even spotted a poster (complete with my name on it) in a shop window in Falmouth when I popped down t’other weekend. The film festival itself was last weekend. Which I was invited to, but Cornwall is a long was to go back to two weekends in a row.

I didn’t design all of this, and to be honest there are a lot of little niggley things I would have done differently. For example, Futura was meant to be used as a secondary font but everything has been designed in the logo-font. Also, for some reason the logo has been placed at a knocked back opacity behind the illustration on the programme cover which is completely unnecessary.

But hey, it’s ma chough!

Autumn trees & Skeleton cows

I finally got to photograph some autumnal trees today, in all their glory against a beautiful bright blue sky. I also finally got to see the recently graffitti-ed skeleton concrete cows. Even if halloween was a little while ago now, they were still awesome.

I have barely won anything in my life but today Xtra Mile tweeted me to say that I am the winner of tickets to see Frank Turner, Jim Lockey and Tim Barry in a couple of weeks. I’ve moaned on several occasions over the last couple of months about not being able to go to this tour – s’all sold out now – purely because the line-up is so good.

I have no complaints now. Thank you Xtra Mile!!!

FXU Hoodie 2012: in photographs

I finally received my FXU (Falmouth & Exeter Students’ Union) 2012 hoodie, after picking it up in Falmouth at the weekend. Quite pleased with how my design has come out in print, and the hoodie itself sure is cosy.

A very Cornish weekend

This weekend I had a flying visit to Falmouth to see Crowns, on Saturday night, playing their album launch show at the Princess Pavilion. I guess it was a bit of a homecoming gig for them; although not actually from Falmouth, they are certainly proud of their Cornish roots. And it sure shows. The gig just wouldn’t have been quite the same in London, or anywhere else for that matter. I love Cornwall and Crowns are fast becoming one of my favourite bands.

Aside from the excellent live music, it was a lovely weekend. Great company, a bit of sunshine, an absolutely freezing sea swim and, most importantly, a bit of Baman & Piderman.

I’ve used a “Cornwall flag” stock photograph for this blog because I had such a great time that I didn’t take any photos.
